Taryn's Story

Taryn grew up constantly on the move due to her father’s military career, always searching for a place where she could truly feel at home. A friend introduced her to Habitat, mentioning that they build accessible homes, and Taryn knew it could be the opportunity she’d been hoping for. When she was accepted into the program, she was overjoyed and eager to begin her sweat equity hours and connect with future neighbors.

For most of her life, Taryn faced daily challenges navigating spaces that weren’t designed for her wheelchair—tight hallways, inaccessible kitchens, and basic chores that became major obstacles. Now, in her new Habitat home, those barriers are gone. She can cook, clean, and move around freely, gaining a sense of independence she hasn’t had before.

Through Habitat’s homeowner classes, Taryn learned essential skills in budgeting, credit, and home maintenance, which helped her feel confident and prepared. She also built lasting friendships and found a strong support system during the transition into homeownership.

Now happily moved in, Taryn looks forward to hosting guests and enjoying her home without limitations. She’s also pursuing a degree in Communications—choosing a path that aligns with both her interests and abilities. With her new home as a foundation, she’s excited to see what doors will open next.
