New Habitat Development to Be Built In Brainerd

(Chattanooga, TN, October26, 2007) Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga is pleased to announce plans for the construction of a new multi-home development in Brainerd, thanks to a partnership with New Covenant Fellowship.

“New Covenant purchased land adjacent to their worship center several years ago, with the thought of doing something to strengthen the Brainerd Community,” says John Atherton, Habitat’s executive director. “After talking with them about partnering with Habitat, they decided that the best use for the property was to sell the land to us, so that we can build simple, decent, affordable and safe homes for families in need.”

“With this development, we will begin using new designs for our homes, to give the neighborhood a more varied appearance, and enhance its value. Our goal is to create a group of attractive starter homes that would sell for about $100,000 at retail. “Our goal is to eliminate poverty by giving low-income families the opportunity to secure the single greatest asset most of us will have in our lives – a home.”

The development is also different because of the partnership with New Covenant. “New Covenant and its members are committed to working with the Habitat families who will live in the new neighborhood, as they make the transition to home ownership, and afterward,” says Atherton. “We hope that this development will serve as model for how churches, and other community organizations can come together to bring lasting change to the lives of low-income families, and Chattanooga neighborhoods.”

Habitat is actively seeking partners to help build homes in the new development, according to Atherton. “$2 million will be required, just for the construction of the homes, let alone infrastructure and site costs. We hope that many in the Brainerd Community will join us as work to transform the lives of these families, and this part of the community.”

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga is a faith-based non-profit organization dedicated to community transformation through the creation of homeownership opportunity for low -income families.
