Becoming a Habitat Homeowner

Are You Willing to Put Forth Effort To Change Your Family’s Future?

To Select Habitat Homeowners we look at:

Need For Housing
You may qualify for a Habitat home if your present housing is not adequate based on:

  • Unsafe Housing - problems with your present residence (water, electrical, sewage or heating systems) or failure to meet city property maintenance standards.
  • Overcrowded Living Situation - the number,the ages and the gender of the children/occupants compared to the number of bedrooms in your home.
  • Being Homeless - actually without a home or living with friends/ relatives.
  • Over Cost-Burdened - unaffordable rent payments.

    Ability to Pay

  • You must be a legal US Citizen and have lived or worked in Hamilton County for the past 12 months.
  • Can not have been in bankruptcy in the past 24 months.
  • Able to pay $500 down and monthly payments totaling $.2,100 for closing costs.
  • Decent credit. A credit check will be performed and evaluated
  • Your income must fall within the guidelines below.

    Willingness to Partner
    Once selected by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga, you become a Habitat Partner Family. Partner families complete a minimum of 300 hours of volunteer work with Habitat called “Sweat Equity,” which must be completed before moving into the home.

    What is Sweat Equity? There are different ways you are able to complete the Sweat Equity hours. You must complete 100 of the hours working on the construction site. The other hours can come from working in the Habitat office, the Habitat ReStore or helping at events.

    Homeowner Education Classes
    Partner Families also attend education classes to complete their sweat equity hours. The classes are designed to prepare you to build, own and maintain your new home. We want to succed as a homeowner!

    To apply for a Habitat Home, Click Here to open our pre-application. Print out the pre-application form, fill it out and send to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga, 1201 East Main St., Chattanooga, TN 37408, or drop it by from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. –Monday-Thur sday and 9-4 on Fridays.
